Travelling to Sardinia

Sardinia, or Sardegna as it is often called, is a large island that lies between the Italian peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It is an autonomous region of Italy that can offer you pristine beauty and a completely fresh look at what Italy has to offer. Unlike what most people think there are regions in Italy that have more to offer than just palatial buildings, works of art and intricately carved and painted churches.

Understanding Sardinia

Sardinia lies in the Mediterranean region and is a great place to visit in the summer months. If offers a whole host of summer activities that you can do. If you really want to understand the place you will need to go further into the island, away from the typical touristy places to peel off the obvious layer of Italy that surrounds it.

Sardinian Climate

While the overall climate of Sardinia is Mediterranean, the climate there is heavily influenced by the barometric low that the Gulf of Genoa causes. East Sardinia is relatively drier at an overall level but it does have its share of the worst rainstorms once in a while. While summers are warm, the fall season is relatively mild on the island. The mistral winds and the Sirocco winds are typical to the island especially between the months of September to April every year.

Getting to Sardinia

Sardinia has airports near Cagliari, Olbia, and Alghero. While the Cagliari-Elmas Airport is the busiest, the Olbia Airport and the Alghero-Fertilia Airport also see a fair amount of traffic. There are also ferry services that you can opt for to reach Sardegna. Most of these will land you at the south coast in Cagliari, the north coast at Porto Torres or the east coast at Olbia, Golfo Aranci or Arbatax.

Getting Around in Sardinia

While the regular modes of transport like rental car and cab services, buses and trains are all available and developed, one of the best ways to get around the island is by sailboat. There are options like the bareboat, the cabin carter and more on offer. So do check out the options before you make your choice.

Things to do in Sardinia

Sardinia is a place that is likely to find appeal among those who love nature. While there is Costa Smeralda area that offers a fair amount of clubbing fun, there are far higher numbers of options when it comes to becoming one with nature in the island.

While in Sardinia, the one thing that you cannot miss is the opportunity to sail. With the kind of winds that the island enjoys and the lush beaches, sailing has become an extremely popular activity on the island. The north and the north east side of the island have a plethora of beaches to boast of. These include the beaches from Stintino to Budoni. Some of the interesting beaches on the east side include Cala Gonone, Arbatax, Villasimius and Muravera. In the south, Chia and Pula are also becoming attractive tourist attractions. The west, interestingly, has long beaches that seem to be never ending. The Piscinas, Porto Pino and Marina di Gonnesa have pristine, shining sands that run as far as the eye can see. In addition to that, the water in each of these beaches is a lush green color that cannot be matched. All these tourist locations are equipped with options like swimming, windsurfing, boating and other fun activities.

In case you want to take a break from the seas, you can head off to the mountains too. While you may feel that there is not much to offer with the highest elevation of 6500 feet anywhere in Sardinia, the terrain is extremely steep and poses the ‘oft coveted’ challenge for hikers and adventurists. The hills in Sardinia are also relatively less crowded and therefore perfect for someone who is looking for some ‘alone’ time. The Domusnovas area is a favorite attraction with the vertical limestone walls. There are also large caves like Dorgali, Santadi, Oliena, Fluminimaggiore and Alghero.

Discover the Beaches of Orosei

While Orosei is a small municipality or commune in the Province of Nuoro in Sardegna or Sardinia, about 140 kilometers from the town of Cagliari, it is best known for the beaches that surround the Gulf of Orosei. There are a line of beaches from Baunei to Cala Gonone that are just waiting to be explored and reveled in. Large caves, ravines, vertical cliffs and intense natural colors are all waiting to be discovered and explored here.

Getting to the Gulf of Orosei

The first thing that you may need to know about Sardinia if you are planning a holiday here is that the region does not have motorways. The double lane SS131 or the Carlo Felice is the largest highway that connects the four provinces.

The Gulf of Orosei can be reached by car from Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero or Porto Torres. All these routes are on the SS131 highway. You can also reach the gulf from Olbia by taking the SS125. While this is a longer route it may be worth its while due to the panoramic coast road that it is.

You can also reach the Gulf of Orosei by taking the Sardinian Regional Transport Company (ARST).

The specific bays can be reached by sea as you take in the cliffs and white limestone. Just take any of the tourist boats that shuffle between the port and the bays. You can also rent a dinghy but make sure that you book in advance if you are going during the peak tourist season.

Beaches in the Gulf of Orosei

Each of the beaches that you visit in this area has something to offer. And you may not be able to pick your most favorite of the lot after you have visited a few. But here are some that are worth visiting.

-          Osalla beach – Located north of Cala Gonone you can get to this beach by sea and by road. A four kilometer long beach this beach has the whitest and most amazing sand. There is also a small stream that flows parallel to the beach and can be crossed by small bridges. Families can enjoy a great day here behind the beach in the pinewood forest too.

-          Cartoe beach – Just after the Caves of Biddiriscottai and Colombi is located this beach that is about 3 kilometers from Cala Gonone. You will have to maneuver your way through bends and stretches of unpaved roads. But the effort is nothing compared to the reward of scenic beauty that you get at the end of the journey. The smell of the sea and the Mediterranean maquis greets you as you reach there. If you are visiting with kids, make sure to visit the sheepfold on the right.

-           Fuili beach – A small beach but worth visiting, Fuili is as majestic as the mountains. You can take your own car and park a few meters from this beach. White limestone, white sand, the blue green sea and the splashes of the sea hitting against the cliffs and the rocks is a sight that cannot be missed. There is a hidden path among the trees that will take you to "Codula Fuili", or the valley.

-          Luna beach – This is called the most beautiful bay by the locals of the Sardegna. The calcareous rocks juxtaposed with the green valley can leave you bewitched and spell bounded. There are also 6 "grottoni" or caves that open up onto the beach. And the pink oleanders are a sight that you would never have seen before. On this beach you can also hire snorkeling equipment, skis and canoes.
